Skatepark fundraising

The Centre Hastings Park is a community driven effort to provide facilities to the residents of Centre Hastings and a local venue for arts, entertainment, and activities.

In order to make this dream a reality the park was developed with the assistance of local sponsors from the business community and various grants available from all levels of government. In order for the park to continue to expand fundraising is key.

The current park is a shining example of what can be done for the community of Centre Hastings to improve the quality of life for all of the residents both young and old.

We currently have a world class skate park, a Community Arts Centre, a forthcoming splash pad, and a massive playground. However, our efforts aren’t finished yet.

In order to continue to grow this park we need your help. Please help us by donating to the skate park and continuing to grow the Centre Hastings Park into a centre piece of our community.

A summer project has a group of students building a new, sustainable performing arts center in Canada

Sustainable living doesn’t have to mean less comfort, beauty or performance—that’s the philosophy that guides Chris Magwood, this year’s designer and lead instructor for the Sustainable Building Design Program at Fleming College, Ontario. Students of this annual summer program have begun construction of a new, sustainable performing arts center in Madoc, Ontario.

Since 2005, students of this program have been building sustainable public buildings for host communities. The buildings mix low impact, low technology materials with high-tech mechanical and energy systems. Previous projects have included a thrift store, a food bank and a classroom.

This year’s straw bale building features geothermal heating and a large photovoltaic power system, making it free of fossil fuels and polluting emissions. Magwood, who was recently named one of Canada’s “Eco All-Stars” by Harrowsmith Magazine, has a history in straw bale building as the co-author of three instructional books on how to plan, design and build with straw.

The building, scheduled to be complete by the end of August, is expected to be the greenest building in Canada.

Skate Park WebSite Launch

The Centre Hastings Park / Madoc Skatepark website has launched and we at Digital Underground Computers hope that you enjoy the work we’ve done. The Madoc Skatepark is a shining example of a community and its youth coming together to develop and implement a phenomenal attraction for the entire community to enjoy.

Even Carman Donato Can Skate. Can Carm Olly?

A great deal of thanks and respect goes to everyone involved in the successful implementation of a long term plan to better serve Madoc and its surrounding areas. Not only does the park help the local community by providing a venue for everyone, both young and old, to enjoy together with the skatepark and the playground and the forthcoming splash pad but also the soon to be completed Community Arts Centre.

In particular we would like to take this opportunity to thank Carman Donato for all of his efforts in developing and launching this skatepark. The park is a shining example to the entire municipality of what can be accomplished when people come together and develop a project that benefits all members of its community.

Over the next few weeks and months the skatepark website will continue to grow as we add more features and functionality to the site. We will be launching a video posting tool for videos taken at the skatepark for anyone to post to and then vote on their favorites. Be sure to check back often as we continue to grow and develop this website to better serve the community of Madoc and Centre Hastings.

Testimonials
Jennifer Richmond, Belleville, Ontario

I wish to thank the good people of Madoc and surrounding area for a wonderful summer. This was our fourth summer in the area and each year gets better than the last. This summer the Skate Park's Day Camp my children attended made all the difference. My children are 5 and 12, and finding a program they both can enjoy and attend together is a challenge. I was so impressed with the calibre of equipment, programming and staffing the camp offered. My son, an identified child with ADHD, found a truly special place at camp this summer. He found a place where he can be himself, and be accepted for who he is. The staff, instrumental in that process, were so attentive, firm, and loving, and brought out the best in my kids. My twelve year old can't wait to come back next year as an LIT. The Skate Park Day Camp was the major reason we extended our holiday by several weeks, and we look forward to taking in the camp again next year.

I just had to write you and express my heartfelt thanks for investing in my family this summer. I spent 6 weeks roaming the area, shopping in the stores and patronizing the diverse local businesses. It was my pleasure to invest my money in a community that invests in their kids. Good job, Centre Hastings! See you next year.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Richmond

I would just like to say that me and all the inliners that we brought from out of town had a great time skating in your event and that we felt more then welcomed in the friendly atmosphere that surrounded us, and the overall positive experience that we shared while skating your park. We didnt know what to espect when taking a journey from as far away as hamilton, but it was definatly worth the journey. One of the things that really stands out is that you allowed some experienced and knowledgable inliners announce the names of the riders and the tricks they were performing, which in my opinion made the event that much better. Overall this is one of the best events I have been to and am definatly going to be returning to this event next year, and a bunch more times over the course of this summer. On behalf of everybody I would like to thank you for holding this event and allowing us to skate in it.

Carman It was a huge pleasure for my husband and myself to meet your acquaintance today and we wish to thank you for all your efforts in bringing to the children of Madoc much joy with the Centre Hastings Skate Park.

As we mentioned, we have just recently moved to Madoc (April 2008) and one of the drawing points for us was definately the Park.

My husband and I are raising our two young granddaughters and we have been visiting Madoc for the last three years with them and inevitably we would "have"to stop off at the playground for some fun and to get rid of some energy. (Theirs, not ours.)

Madoc offered us more than any other locality when we were deciding where to move. To list a few of these - the park, citizenship participation in just about everything that happens in Madoc and awesome fund raising campaigns, shops, the Medical Centre, our Dentist is here, restaurants, the school system and staff, swimming pool, we even have a butcher and a baker - every facility that we need is here and the people are very friendly and made us feel welcome (even before we moved here). The only trip we have to take outside of Madoc is to the Belleville Hospital to my granddaughters Diabetes Clinic.

My eldest granddaughter (9) has Type 1 Diabetes. We moved to Madoc so she could get lots of exercise as this is one of the key components to controlling her diabetes. The park fills that need for her. She bicycles at the park, plays at the playground at the park, skateboards at the park, and this year through the fantastic day camp program she is learning to inline skate (and very proud of her accomplishments). Our younger granddaughter (6) is having a great time - she can't wait to get to the park - I have no trouble getting them out the door these days.

The big question on everyone's mind these days (no matter where we go) even in the villages of Stirling and Marmora is when is the splash pad going to be ready. We understand the delays that Mother Nature imposed and we are all very patient as we know this will be the icing on the cake for the children - there is no other facility in the area that offers so much. We have a lot of company visiting us and we inevitably take the children to the skate park and the relatives as well - we like to show off the facility and our families and friends are truly impressed. Their first comments are always why can't our town do something like this?

The new Art building quite frankly blows our minds - we have never seen anything like it and it is an inspiration to anyone who tours the facility. We all go home thinking why can't we do something like that at our own homes, just a little bit of "greening"would make a huge difference.

Very rarely does a day go by that we are not at the park doing something (I even picked the girls up from school and took them there for a picnic lunch hour) - and the park always has people with their children there playing. The young mothers and their babies love the friendly atmosphere and you see them chatting while they push their children on the swings - it is a very social place.

The staff at the skate park and the day camp staff have a wonderful rapport with the children. I can tell that they actually care about the children and it is not just a job for them. They are truly dedicated to the children and the conservation of the park. Amazingly there is no graffiti or garbage.

This park not only satisfies the immediate every day needs of the children - the park is enriching all people - from very young babies and children to teenagers, to young families and even us past our skateboarding days - it's magnificent - thank you so much for making it all possible.

Mike Bugg, Doug's Bicycle Sales & Service, Belleville, Ontario

I am emailing you regarding the rule stating that bicycles with wheels larger than 20" are not allowed in the park. There are several people like myself that would go to the park but have 24" bikes (made for skate parks) but cannot go. BMX companies produce a large number of bikes larger than 20" for bigger kids but we are left outside the fence when it comes to your park. These bikes are BMX bikes in every way with the exception of a bigger wheel. Could you please clarify this rule and the reasons behind it?? I see this as a form of discrimination and shortsightedness on someones part.......more people equals more funding and a better park. I am the manager of Doug's bicycle in Belleville and have supported this fine facitlity since its opening and hear constant complaints from a lot of customers with bikes made for the park (not mountain bikes) but with 24" or 26" wheels they are forced to use them on private or public property, causing damage and tax dollars to be spent for repairs. I just want a clear explaination of this rule so I can tell my customers why they will be kicked out. As an example, I sold a 24" BMX yesterday to a kid who is 6'6" who couldn't ride a 20".......how fair is it, he must sit outside the fence on his new bike and watch his buddies have a great time in the park.....

Concrete Powder, Madoc, On

“A park like they have in Madoc, Ontario shows anything is possible. Madoc is a small Canadian town, don’t blink or you will miss it. However they got a skatepark is beyond me, but it clearly wasn’t beyond everyone who pitched in and got the park built though.”

Centre Hastings Skatepark c/o Community Futures Development Corporation of North & Central Hastings and South Algonquin, Centre Hastings, On

”The Madoc Skatepark is considered to be one of the finest skate parks anywhere. Madoc is one nifty place to ride the concrete wave.”

Toronto Sun, Toronto, On

“Madoc Park is a magical draw!”
